The Beaver Dredging Company Gold Mine is in YukonKoyukuk, Alaska. Historically the site has been part of the Tolovana Mining District. The site was first discovered in 1910. Gold dredges were used as early as 1900 on the Seward Peninsula in Alaska, but it wasnt until 1908 that gold dredging became a financially viable option. By 1910, there were 18 dredges in Alaska. In 1914, 42 were operating throughout the state.
Eventually the two companies were consolidated into the Yukon Consolidated Gold Company or YCGC. The increase in the price of gold to 35 an ounce revived dredging during the depression; however, the Second World War, increased wages, and the fixed price of gold eventually took their toll on profitability, and all dredging activity ceased in 1966.
