Prior to 1880s coal mining was a relatively small insignificant industry. Most of the early mines were located at outcrops exposed by weathering and erosion. After this time, mining focused on the chief producing mines on the Brisbane River at Redbank, Goodna and Ipswich. At these mines there were two ways of extracting the coal: tunnel or shaft.
Coal mining would spread to the Hetton area of east Durham, where the coal was much deeper, after 1800 but it was not significant in southwest Durham until after 1825. This is partly because south west Durham was further away from the ports of Tyne and Wear where ports were served by an ever increasing network of colliery railways.

Industrial work during the nineteenth century was often hazardous. Nowhere was this situation more true that in coal mining. By the 1860s some anthracite coal mines in northeastern Pennsylvania had reached as much as 1,500 feet into the earth. Miners reached these depths with technologies that, by later standards, would seem primitive.

What industry that existed before 1700 used coal, but it came from coal mines that were near to the surface and the coal was relatively easy to get to.
Coal production in Will County began to decline after the 1880s, as miners exhausted the most easily reached portions of the shallow local deposits. Output appears to have peaked around 1882, when two thousand miners raised 650,000 tons from the Braidwood shafts. Mining activity declined steadily over the next few years.
