Gold is most often found in quartz rock. When quartz is found in gold bearings areas, it is possible that gold will be found as well. Quartz may be found as small stones in river beds or in large seams in hillsides. The white color of quartz makes it easy to spot in many environments.
That some gold bearing ore bodies appear as is if they have been deposited by replacement, but this is not the case for the California quartz veins. The Diadem lode, southwest of Meadow Valley, in Plumas County, appears to be a bed of limestone or dolomite chiefly replaced by goldbearing quartz and chalcedony, but in such a way that fossil foraminifera are still identifiable in the ore.
